Our Approach to Material & Alloy Selection

Incorrect material selection leads to premature component failure, customer returns, and expensive re-engineering. Conversely, over-specifying alloy grade or purity adds unnecessary raw material cost. Steel Support 24 helps foundries find the optimal point — the alloy grade that meets functional requirements at the lowest sustainable cost.

We begin by analysing the component's service conditions: mechanical loads (tensile, fatigue, impact), operating temperature range, corrosion environment, and any applicable industry standards (IS, ASTM, DIN, BS, JIS). Based on this, we define the minimum mechanical property requirements and identify candidate alloy grades.

Candidate grades are evaluated across four dimensions: mechanical performance, castability (fluidity, shrinkage tendency, hot-tear susceptibility), machinability, and raw material cost and availability from Indian and international suppliers. We also assess heat treatment requirements and their impact on total part cost.

For foundries experiencing batch-to-batch inconsistency, we audit the charge mix (pig iron, steel scrap, returns, ferro-alloys) and recommend standardized charge calculations. Where applicable, we specify inoculation and nodularizing treatments aligned with IS 1865 (SG iron) or IS 210 (grey iron) requirements.

Service is applicable to foundries producing castings for automotive, agriculture, pumps and valves, power generation, defence, and export markets requiring material certification.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes, this is a common engagement. We identify Indian or regional alloy grades that meet the same mechanical property targets and work with your quality team to qualify the replacement through mechanical testing and customer approval. Most substitutions achieve 10–25% raw material cost savings.

  • Batch inconsistency is usually a charge mix control problem rather than a wrong alloy grade choice. We audit your charge calculation method, scrap segregation practices, and melt treatment procedures to identify the variability source and establish tighter controls.

  • Material selection consulting is advisory. Where laboratory verification is needed — chemical analysis, tensile testing, hardness checks — we coordinate with accredited testing laboratories and can provide recommendations through our Mechanical & Metallurgical Testing service.
